Apenas pisé suelo guatemalteco me sentí bienvenida. Cuatro niños, entre "seños" y "bienvenidos a Guatemala", practicamente nos arrancharon las maletas (que son muchas, como ya se sabe), para llevarlas loma arriba, hasta el bus que nos esperaba para ir a Flores. Recorrimos el camino más polvoriento y pedroso que jamás he recorrido. Todos terminamos negros y con dolor de garganta.
Cuando llegamos a Santa Elena (el pueblo antes de cruzar el puente a Flores), Helene se subió en un Tuc-Tuc, unos (moto-)taxi, para irse directo a Chiquimula, nos abandonó. Los chicos y yo, tenemos planes para ver muchas cosas en Guatemala y ella ya los ha visto muchas veces antes, entonces prefirió encontrarse con sus amigos de hace 4 años, cuando vivió aquí. Nosotros pasamos la noche en Flores, sintiendo ya la gran diferencia de precios entre México y Guatemala.
We drove down to Palenque, crossed the Usumacinta river again, but this time our destiny was not de Yaxchilán ruins, it was the other side of the border.
As soon as I stept on gutemalan ground, I felt welcome. Four boys, between "seños" (misses) and "welcome to Guatemala", they took our bags (a lot, as you know), to take them uphill to the bus that would take us to Flores. It was a bumpy, dusty ride. We all ended up black and with with pain in our throats.
When we got to Santa Elena (the town before Flores), Helene got on a Tuc-Tuc, a (motorbike) taxi to go straight to Chiquimula, she left us. The boys and I, have planes to see a lot of places in Guatemala and she has seen it one to many times, so she decided to meet her friends, the ones she met when she lived there 4 years ago. We spend the night in Flores, noticing already the huge price difference between Mexico and Guatemala.
